Barbie Adventure Riding Club is a 2003 adventure game for all the girls that have grown with their favourite doll and fashion icon, Barbie! This beauty goddess will take care of and ride four different horses (a gray, white, paint, and palomino, these being the breeds). So, girls around the world, take part of the fantasy adventure and race, discover and learn with Barbie! This game is great for those that want to play something educational and nonviolent. The controls while riding the horse imply simplistic actions, like making it jump, steering, and adjusting the speed. I had an entertaining time with the interesting and challenging puzzles, races and quests, and attention: not dull or childish at all! I say this because at a first glance, Barbie Adventure Riding Club seems a game for kids and little girls, due to the presence of this popular Doll, but things are different, and not you might expect concerning it. Even the adults will take pleasure into playing it in their free time. The locations are exotic and wonderful, and the sound effects are fairly decent. The horseback riding seemed quite realistic and the sensation is well recreated, this being another good thing about the game, and an extra reason to try it!
Today we are checking out Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp which was released in 2008 for a number of different systems. It is honestly crazy how many different Barbie games have been released over the years and this one is part of a sub-series in the Barbie games world, actually, it is the fourth game in this sub-series! The main version that I am talking about is the PS2, but it was also released for the PC, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS.
The Storm Has Come To The Island
Say what you want about these Barbie games, but I always feel that at the very least they do try and have a decent story. This game is set on a lovely island that has been the victim of a pretty brutal storm. Barbie needs to roll her sleeves up and try to get the island back to normal all the while taking care of her horses and winning races. I have to be honest, the story is not all that bad and it is not even based on a tie-in movie.
An Open World Barbie Game?
Ok, so do not go thinking that Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp is like Red Dead Redemption in its scale! However, at the time this was as close to an open world Barbie game as we had gotten. The game has you going around the island and talking to many different NPCs they will give you missions to do such as a kid asking you to go and find his toy that was lost in the storm. Most of what you do will be fetch quests, but you are free to do these any way you want.
The controls of the game are decent enough. The only real issue I had was the horse running into things and then getting “startled” you can tell the game is designed with kids in mind as it is not very challenging.
All We Have Is Time
As the name of the game suggests, horses play a big role in the game. This ranges from using your horse to get around the island to taking part in timed races. The races are interesting and this is where you can see that the game was clearly made with children in mind. The reason that I say this is because they give you about 10 minutes to do one of these races and you often need less than half of that to do it.
Hang On, I Have Another Call
One clever thing the game does is make use of Barbie’s phone. In Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp, pretty much everything that you need to know is on your phone. This ranges from checking out the map, seeing what quest you can do, and even teleporting you back to somewhere on the map.
Looking Good Barbie!
One thing that the majority of Barbie games have in common is that they always have a solid presentation and that is the case here. It has some well-done cut scenes to move the story along and the game in general looks good. As this is a Barbie game, you can get a ton of outfits for her and have fun dressing her up if you want.
Look, is Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp going to make a list of the greatest games of all time? Heck no! However, this is a very competent game and one of the better Barbie ones out there. It may be on the very easy side, but I feel for the younger gamers it is aimed at that is not a bad thing.
I am not sure it is the kind of game that is going to keep anyone’s attention once it is done, but for the time it lasts, it is a decent time.
